After last year’s washout, it wasn’t much of a surprise to arrive at Roskilde in the middle on Saturday night to be greeted by what was, I’d imagine, a pretty impressive re-enactment of the aftermath of The Battle of the Somme. There were bodies piled high, hoards of people pushing, crushing, crying for somewhere dry to lay their head, the only thing that was a little out of place was the woman saying “this may sound sexy, but I am wet,” whilst showing Bearded her back - moist from a night in the mud.
But if the first night was a challenge, the rest has been the reward: glorious sunshine, good food, good times. The music doesn’t even start until tomorrow, so Bearded has been taking time away from an internet connection to soak up the atmosphere, all of it, and this year it is a holiday camp, especially for those who endured a month’s worth of rain in a night in 2007, and still came back to tell the tale under the canopy.
So not much to write about, not from a musical perspective anyway, from the one stage that is open we have seen someone try to be Bjork and fail, then a beer in the sun seemed the only serious option for the serious music news hound.
Instead perhaps a preview, this year there are some fantastic independent artists playing: Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Efterklang, Holy Fuck to name a few off the top of my head. We also have some real legends of music performing too: Neil Young, Solomon Burke and, no matter what anyone has said about his set at Glastonbury, Jay-Z is closing it for Bearded at midnight on Sunday.
Sun, fun and good music, with rain not forecast to come in until at least Sunday, it looks like a long, glorious week is ahead.
